Professional hedge cutting
A well-maintained hedge does more than look good — it provides privacy, defines boundaries, supports wildlife and adds structure to your garden. Our hedge cutting service delivers a clean, even finish on hedges of all sizes and species, from low box edging to tall leylandii screens.
We work carefully and methodically, cutting to the shape you want and ensuring a consistent finish throughout. All cuttings and arisings are cleared and removed as part of every job.

Formal and informal domestic hedges of all heights and species.
Boundary hedges
Tall boundary and screening hedges, including roadside and estate hedges.
Box and topiary

Leylandii & conifers
Reduction and maintenance of overgrown conifer hedges and screens.
Commercial sites
Regular maintenance contracts for housing estates, car parks and business premises.
Overgrown restoration
Renovation of neglected hedges to bring them back into shape and health.
Methods we use
Both methods leave a clean, sharp finish — we choose the right approach based on your hedge type, size and the level of precision required.
Hand Trimming
Ideal for intricate topiary, formal box hedging and precision shaping. Hand tools give a finer, more controlled finish on delicate or shaped hedges where power equipment would be too aggressive.
Powered Cutting
Our primary method for longer hedges, tall screens and bulk reduction work. Professional petrol-powered trimmers deliver a fast, consistent cut across large areas with an even, uniform result.

Hedge cutting FAQs
How often should hedges be cut?
Most garden hedges benefit from cutting once or twice a year. Fast-growing species like Leylandii may need trimming two or three times during the growing season, while slower-growing species such as yew or box may only need attention once a year. We can advise on the right schedule for your specific hedge type after a visit.
What is the best time of year to cut a hedge?
Timing depends on the species and whether nesting birds are present. As a general rule, avoid cutting hedges between March and August to protect nesting birds — this is a legal requirement under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The best times are typically late winter (February) before nesting begins, and again in late summer or early autumn (August–October). We always check for nesting activity before starting work.
How much does hedge cutting cost?
Cost depends on the length and height of the hedge, the species, access to the site, and how much clearance is needed afterwards. We offer free, no-obligation quotes — contact us to arrange a visit and we'll give you a clear, itemised price.
Can you cut large or overgrown hedges?
Yes. We regularly tackle overgrown hedges that have been left for several years, using specialist equipment to reshape and reduce them. For very large reductions, we'll advise on how far back is safe to cut without harming the hedge's long-term health.
Do you remove the cuttings afterwards?
Yes — all arisings (cuttings and green waste) are cleared from the site and removed as part of the job. We leave your garden clean and tidy. Just let us know if you'd like to keep any of the material for composting.
Are you fully insured for hedge cutting?
Yes. TD Tree Services carries full public liability insurance for all hedge cutting and maintenance work. Whether it's a small garden boundary hedge or a large farm hedge, you're fully protected throughout.
